Alluvial Gold
featuring Louise Devenish
Alluvial Gold brings nature into the performance space and makes it the hero of a sonic installation. Presented inside the Windsong Pavilion, the performance features visually spectacular sonified curtains of oyster shell, sculptural instruments of ceramic, bronze and aluminium and underwater video and audio materials in combination with live percussion.
Developed by Louise Devenish in close collaboration with visual artist Erin Coates and composer Stuart James, the performance offers a new lens through which to view bodies of water around our cities.
During settlement, native shellfish reefs were heavily dredged and ground up as a source of lime for mortar, roads and building materials for Australian cities. Inspired by the impact of this historical removal of shellfish reefs on the river systems of southern and eastern Australia, Alluvial Gold transports us along the waterways we inhabit and live by with a dramatic visual and sonic score.
“The music is driving and turbulent, tense with drama yet free-flowing like white-water over a waterfall.”
